 Friends on the Out (FotO)

Friends on the Out (FotO) is a unique Mentoring scheme run out of the chaplaincy at Ashfield Young Offenders Institute in Bristol.

Nationally it is estimated that 80% of 14-18 year old offenders re-offend within 3 years of being convicted.

The heart behind FotO is to see a significant reduction in re-offending by giving young people the support, encouragement and stability they so desperately need after release from prison.

With potentially hundreds of young people every year needing the support of a FotO Mentor we are always looking for new Volunteer Mentors.

We Need You

We are looking for people with a heart for young offenders, who have the patience, commitment and compassion to be a positive role model in the lives of these young men.

Full and comprehensive training as well as travel expenses are provided so that our Mentors are fully equipped to be the best they can be.

To ensure we can support as many young people as possible we are particular looking for Mentors from the following areas: Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, Swindon, South Wales, Southampton, Birmingham and London.

FotO Volunteer Mentors visit male young offenders on a one-to-one basis for about one hour a week.

The Mentoring relationship begins in the prison while the young person is serving the last 3-6 months of his sentence. It then continues for a further 6 months after their release over the difficult period of reintegration into society.

The Mentor offers advice on education, employment and housing as well as offering emotional and spiritual support.

 Important Dates

31st January 2009 -  An Award-Winning Evening
Pictured to the left are some of the amazing Friends on the Out Volunteer Mentors pictured collecting the Avon and Somerset Criminal Justice Board Award at Rookery Manor, near Brent Knoll on Tuesday 2 December 2008.

The awards are held each year to honour and recognise the achievement of individuals and teams who have gone the extra mile to improve the criminal justice system for the people of Avon and Somerset.

In opening the awards ceremony, Chief Constable Colin Port, who chairs the Avon and Somerset Criminal Justice Board said: "Every day thousands of people across the criminal justice system do an amazing job and their dedication makes a dramatic difference to people’s lives. I congratulate the winners of these awards. They truly are heroes of the criminal justice system."

The award commendation noted, "local charity Prodigal Son Ministries won this award for its Friends on the Out Mentoring scheme. Based at Ashfield Young Offenders Institute, the scheme supports offenders in the months before and after their release from prison. Mentors offer young offenders advice on education, employment and housing as well as emotional and spiritual support with the aim of reducing the number of young people re-offending.

The Avon and Somerset judging panel recognised the goodwill shown by the Volunteer Mentors as well as the new and innovative approach they have taken to Mentoring. The team has worked above and beyond their duties to improve the lives of the young people they Mentor."
27th February 2009 - FotO 'Working Towards' APS
We're pretty excited about the work we're doing, but nobody is resting on their laurels! That's why Friends on the Out has registered with the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF) and is now officially 'working towards' achieving the MBF's 'Approved Provider Standard' for best practice in Mentoring Schemes.

Our aim is to complete the very detailed submission to MBF during 2008 and we hope to earn the highly respected APS status during 2009. Going for APS status is a big undertaking, it means we have to prove all our processes, structures and operations are tip-top. In turn APS means we will be able to boast that we have the best possible nationally-recognised external accreditation for the work we're doing to help young men in need.

The MBF is the UK government's national body for supporting, benchmarking and recognising excellence in both Mentoring and Befriending schemes large and small, local and country-wide. Read more on their website at www.mandbf.org.uk
